The Road Not Taken
- Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Lovely Poem, deep insight...life is all about choices...it is the choices you make that make or break you!!
When I was doing my time as an article clerk, a colleague commented, "Sen, there will be times when you will come on crossroads, and the choice you make will determine your destiny..."
Profound words from someone who had no clue about what he wanted in life...I laughed it off at that time but, off late, this thought has come back to haunt me...
We unconciously make choices everyday, every hour, every minute, for that matter every second of our life...Every morning when we wake up...alive...we make a choice to live...get out of bed...go to school/college/work...we make a choice to see what the world has to offer outside the cosy confines of our home...we meet or avoid people...again choices...answer or avoid phone calls/ emails...choices...
Every destination has more than one approach route...when we select one we conciously choose to enrich our lives with the experience/people/memories this road has to offer...but then we also select not to experience what the other road has to offer...often we think that we will take other route some other time but, chances are we never may...cause the choices we make may take us far away and we may or may not be able to retrace our steps back...our lives may be better or worse for these choices...
Think about it...There is no one-fix-all-solution in life...the choice made may give different results to different people...even though the choice is the same...
e.g: not everyone who runs away from home to become a bollywood star achieves that kind of success...some end up in places we would not want to talk about in mixed company...Is this why wise old men say, Keep your conscience clear, if your conscience tell you that something is wrong don't do it...atleast you can face the challenges the next day has to offer with a clear heart...
All said and done the road not taken will always haunt you, by reminding you of the things that may have been if only you chose to go there...
Sen, every journey, every experience is unique...if we listen to our hearts, the path meant for us will call us...at least this is what i am believing now:):)
ReplyDeletemost often we r scared on less-travelled roads n chose otherwise...that creates the whole hauntings later on...
A cassic case of 'Sometimes the questions are complicated but the answers are simple'- Dr. Seuss
Beautiful post n poem..Robert Frost is my favorite !!
@ Sen - :),I have also written a post on choices..You have conveyed it aptly. I would like to add that "To travel down the road not taken is a big feat, but it's sure can be acheived". All that is needed is focus and courage.
ReplyDeleteEven the simplest thing seems so complicated at that point in time wen it has to be decided upon... Once a choice is made, it is very difficult to undo!! But sometimes we do get a secong chance!! :)
ReplyDeletesen - nice post.. about the choices, so many things which do not even come to our mind but you have wrapped that so beautifully :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, you too on philosophical track.. I have observed that gang is crazy or guess "like minded" is the right word.. when we start on humor every body writes on the funny track and when we start on philosophy, there is a competition to beat each other there as well :)
Seno, confused? Whats happening?
ReplyDeleteWhy should the road not taken haunt you and me? Its not the road that determines our destiny, its how we walk on the road that determines it. Dont worry about your choices. Worry about how you could mold it for your good :) nice post.. good day :P
:) very good one...
ReplyDeleteVin...nice...mine too!!!
ReplyDelete@ Josh...thanks...but the road not travelled can also mean that you chose the radical approach when you should have taken the normal route...in which case the focus and courage you put might all go to waste...
@ SS...true
@ ST...yeah the vibes affect all of us ...we have bonded on a spiritual level I guess :)
@ Sawan...no I am not confused...can see quite clearly...read the poem...there is a hidden meaning
@ Karmanna...thanks!!
@ Sen...this is one of the best in ur blog. You've explained it beautifully....
ReplyDelete@ST...ya...everyone are in a philosophical track..the 'Gang Of Philosophers"
@ Sen philosophically and all huh...
ReplyDeleteSen ... amazing post ... i can totally relate to what you are saying. the one choice that haunts me is the choice of pursuing CA .. while i have not done so bad, it is not what i hv always wanted to do .. deep down. what i loved doing was programing and another area in which i think i could have done much better is .. engineering. having joined the commerce stream (everyone was doing that!) and being reasonably well at accountancy .. guess pursuing CA was the logical thing to do. Well .. as u said, nothing much can be done now. but i hv now decided, as vin has commented, to listen to my heart and that has brought me to my current job.
ReplyDeletethnx for reproducing the poem and for the post
Sen amazing post... Loved it.. It was my memory poem in Std-8 :) But still i dint memorise it...
ReplyDelete@ Scrawler... thanks...
ReplyDelete@ LV...yeah you finally turned me into one :P
@ RJ...Most people use the "Theory of Elimination" when joining Commerce, mostly they do not get good enough marks to get into a Science college of their choice or find that it is too much to study and Arts is beneath them so after eliminating the two what is left is COMMERCE...hehehe...:P
@ Karthik...thanks...glad you liked it...the fact that you still remember that it was a memory poem in Class 8 though you did not memorise it, is a justification that it made an impact on your mind :)
Hmm...the way I see it, if all our life we think in this particular vein - had I done this what would have happened, or if I'd chosen this particular way would I still be here, etc etc, we could be leading a very stressful life! & maybe not a very happy one. I think the best way is to go with the flow & not think too much! Work hard & you'll get what you deserve.
ReplyDeleteBut what do you think Seno - is this a little too chilled out or a juvenile way of thinking? :-)
@ Vibes...I like to believe, what sets the achievers apart for the losers is that they don't sit around waiting for life to happen to them...they make their life happenning!!!
ReplyDeleteEveryone gets the choices...knowing which to choose is the trick...and if you can make either of the choices work for you...you are Invincible...
.. and if you don't know where to go, any road will lead you there ... ha ha ha!! (just churaofied from another blog)
ReplyDeleteThis post was a very nice read... Reminds of the quote: "Life offers you three choices on every turn... The right choice, the wrong choice and the choice you'll ultimately end up making". Life is always in the gray's... If there are too many failures, we have lived badly and if there too less failure we haven't lived enough. Looking forward to reading more of your work.
ReplyDelete@ Aniket...thanks for stopping by...glad you like it...true we get three choices :)...
ReplyDeleteeeechaa mailaaa!! zhalaa kay tulaaa??? marl naay tuchindaa?
ReplyDeletemy expert comment on your dho muu ka road (choice of roads) = life mein jab waat lagne ke rehti hai tho no matter whichver path u choose, waaat to lagti hi hai.. its how u experience the thrill of "dukh mein sukh"!!!
enjoy
each choice made determines who we are and where we land up... must really be considered carefully.. tough task, but we are left with no choice but to make choices.
ReplyDeleteGreat post :)
@ Sen
ReplyDeletethis poem really haunted me in my tenth standard matric exams(as this was the byheart poem- and I suck at byhearting something)... but after my tenth exams- I was wondering whether I should take the Commerce group towards which my heart was inclining as I wanted to become a lawyer or to take Computer Science group which my mom asked me to take to become an engineer- and this poem gave me the answer- I took the road less travelled by and it has made all the difference :)but its quite thrilling to think what if I had taken the other path- its wat explained in the movies- sliding doors/butterfly effect and 12B in tamil...everyone will definitely have a story like this if you ask them - but trust me the choices you make is always right as Vinnie said "if we listen to our hearts, the path meant for us will call us..." so the road which you missed should not haunt you as they say known devil is better than an unknown angel :P
@ All...I guess a spot of explaining is required...When I say "haunt" I mean that there will be days when you look back and ponder "what if"...
ReplyDeleteI do not mean that this will be a bad "what if" it could also be a good "what if"...
@ Sudhir...finally you have condescended to comment on my blog...hehehe...yenak marl naai tuchidaji :P :P :P
ReplyDelete@ Lena...thanks for stopping by...yes to pick one choice and make the most of it...is what makes or break us...
@ Lancelot...I have stopped trusting my heart, I do tend to follow my hearts will, but staunchly take directions from my head :)...
@ sen
ReplyDeletehmmm.....
